Meet the artist:

Sara Holmes is a professional artist who created Willowtwisters in 2001.  While a lot of her time is spent teaching others she has emerged as a serious artist establishing a solid reputation, attracting some high profile public and private commissions and community projects.

This is a course in willow sculpture where you will learn how to create layers of shape and form, as Sara teaches you her unique and specialised techniques of additive sculpture using stitches and weave.

With lots of support, student’s personalized ideas and designs, will be sculpted onto a basic armature of mild steel or hazel, constructed beforehand. Please look at the photos of mine and our previous students creations for ideas of what is possible. You will be guided in your choice by Sara.

All materials are prepared and supplied for the day.

Warm layers of clothing and suitable footwear is advisable during colder months. If the weather is too severe I will advise of the alternative local venue.

Despite the relaxing nature of this artform it is quite a tiring day. If you suffer with pain in your hands, for example severe arthritis you may find this challenging. I try to make work stations as ergonomic as possible to allow seated and standing work positions.

I have to enforce a strict cancellation policy which i urge you to read before booking.  Last minute cancellations on small courses can potentially cause a whole course to be cancelled, risking the loss of everyone’s bookings, prepared willow, armatures, venue hire and food preparation.

About the course:

This course is carefully designed for small exclusive groups to ensure optimal tutoring attention. For this reason I have to enforce a *strict cancellation policy which I urge you to read before booking.

This is a course which focuses on sculpture. Unlike a craft such as basketry, where a prescribed method is followed, in this course you will learn how to develop layers of shape and form. I will teach you my unique and specialised techniques of additive sculpture using stitching, binding and weaving techniques.

In this two-day course, students will have time to learn the more in-depth, techniques I have developed, to create my willow sculptures.  I will guide you through the process from beginning to end. You will learn how to create a basic armature and how to work from pictures and photographs. I will guide you through my unique style of willow sculpture to create a densely woven, realistic looking deer.

This course also includes a useful eBook to download and work through before the course, which will help you to prepare for the sculpting experience.

My courses mainly take place outdoors at my beautiful venue at Weavers Wood in Pirbright, so warm layers of clothing and suitable footwear is advisable during colder months. However if the weather is too severe I will advise of the alternative venue, which is usually the church rooms at our pretty church in Pirbright. You will be notified closer to the date of your workshop. Please note that despite the relaxing nature of this artform it is quite tiring. If you suffer with pain in your hands, for example severe arthritis you may find this challenging. I try to make work stations as ergonomic as possible to allow seated and standing work positions.  A vegetarian lunch and refreshments are included.

Day 1

  • Tools and equipment, willow types and preparation for sculpture, how it is grown for craft, where to source it and tips on how to grow your own.
  • Preparing the armature.
  • Binding, sewing and weaving techniques to begin sculpting the inner shape and form of your deer.

Day 2

  • Sculpting techniques, maintaining shape and form.
  • Adding details such ears, antlers and tail
  • Surface texture, refined weaving techniques.

*I have to enforce a strict cancellation policy which i urge you to read before booking.  Last minute cancellations on small courses can potentially cause a whole course to be cancelled, risking the loss of everyone’s bookings, prepared willow, armatures, venue hire and food preparation.
